If predictions are fulfilled, and unless something very unexpected occurs tonight, Sunday will be the last night of racing for "Mutua Madrileña". Javier "Bubi" Sansó and Pachi Rivero have performed what they hope to be the last tack to set a direct course for Barcelona.
Last night "Mutua Madrileña" passed Spain’s Cabo de Gata on the coast of Almeria with fairly strong winds accompanying her. "It’s been a windy night", explained Pachi Rivero, "with 35 knots (65 km/h) and big seas. The sea is still rough, but I think the more North we get, the more the wind and the waves will die down."
"Temenos 2", one hour from finishing
"Temenos 2" hasn’t had a moment’s rest from "Mutua Madrileña" who’ve been putting the pressure on the duo in an attempt to seize third place on the podium since Wellington (NZ)… but now the team can breathe easy. Dominque Wavre from Switzerland and Frenchwoman Michèle Paret have sailed a great race and are expected to reach Barcelona at around 19:30 GMT+1 this Sunday afternoon.
In this way "Temenos 2" closes the podium of the very first Barcelona World Race, with "Paprec Virbac 2" and "Hugo Boss" taking first and second place respectively.
Satisfaction onboard "Mutua Madrileña"
The arrival of "Temenos 2" in Barcelona signifies the end of "Mutua Madrileña"’s pursuit of a bronze prize finish. Pachi and "Bubi" may not have brought the goods home, but they’re very proud of their performance in what has been, for both skippers, their first round the world race. "Having been so close to third place and not getting our hands on it has left us hungry for more, but both’ Bubi’ and I are really pleased with the race we’ve sailed."
